COVID - United Machinists Response

COVID-19 - United Machinists Response

As the COVID-19 situation rapidly evolves, here at United we are acutely aware of our responsibility to our employees, suppliers, clients and our wider community to play our part in ‘flattening the curve through social distancing’. In response we have taken the following precautions:

  • Closing the workshop to all non essential visitors

  • Cancelling all work related travel immediately

  • Adjusting shifts and break times to minimise numbers of people together at once and allow safe distances between people to be maintained

  • Relocating ‘stand-ups’ to the shop floor to allow for adequate physical distances between staff

  • Shifting scheduled external meetings to online conferencing

  • Sanitisation of all doors and common hard surfaces between shifts

  • Sanitisation of staff room between breaks

  • Relocation of some staff to work from home / separate office

From a business continuity perspective for our clients, please be assured that it is business as usual. We have contacted all of our suppliers and have been assured that materials, tooling and freight are not currently affected.

And to share one comfort that I hope we can all take from this – it’s been heartening to hear from our clients and suppliers about their plans and assurances, our communities are ‘virtually’ banding together to support local business.

At this uncertain time it’s tempting to slip into a state of anxiety about the economic ramifications, however at United we are also seeing the opportunities – perhaps this can act as a catalyst for recognising the importance of NZ’s manufacturing capability to diversify and de-risk global supply chains.

Best,
